Celebrating International Women’s Day 2019 in Papua New Guinea
IFES celebrated International Women’s Day 2019 with counterparts in Port Moresby and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea. The Port Moresby-based Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission hosted a celebration and luncheon, and the IFES team in Bougainville joined local civil society organizations and other partners on a peace march through Buka Town.

Elections for All: Empowering the Underrepresented
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees all individuals the freedom to partake in their nation’s government and political processes, including elections. Yet, many individuals around the world face barriers to full participation due to social, ethnic and economic inequalities. Yemenis Are Open to Improving Status of Women, but Obstacles to Gender Equality Remain.
CAIRO (December 5, 2010)— The latest nationwide survey conducted by the Status of Women in the Middle East and North Africa (SWMENA) project finds that while majorities of both Yemeni women and men indicate support for introducing gender quotas in elected bodies and setting a minimum marriage age for girls, overall, different roadblocks remain on Yemeni’s path to achieving gender equality.

IFES Launches Project to Empower Women in the Middle East
The Status of Women in the Middle East and North Africa (SWMENA), a project to improve the legal, political and social standing of women, is underway. IFES, the Institute of Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) and the Canadian Parliamentary Center (CPC), the partners in this endeavor, hope that the project will remove some of the roadblocks to women’s self-empowerment in the region.
