Elections in the Maldives: 2021 Local Council Elections
On Saturday April 10, Maldivian voters will go to the polls for Local Council elections. For the first time, Women’s Development Committee representatives, who are responsible for upholding women’s rights and increasing their political participation, will also be elected through the Local Council elections.

Elections on Trial Project: Inaugural Meeting of the Africa Electoral Jurisprudence Working Group
IFES is working to establish regional peer networks of election arbiters, which allow judges and election commissioners to discuss best practices and share comparative examples of how other countries deal with specific categories of complaints and disputes. Following the inaugural meeting of the Europe and Eurasia Electoral Jurisprudence Network in Lithuania last year, the pilot Africa network event took place in South Africa on April 16-17.

Regional Director on “Political Campaign Finance: Safeguarding Electoral Integrity in Africa"
As part of its annual report, the Wilson Center Africa Program asked IFES Regional Director for Africa Rushdi Nackerdien to contribute an essay on campaign finance. Learning About Violence Against Women in Politics in Leaps and Bounds: Surprising Findings from the Maldives
In 2011, IFES' Electoral Violence Education and Resolution (EVER) methodology found that women were rarely the subjects of political violence in the Maldives – less than 2 percent of violent incidents specifically targeted women, compared to 46 percent targeting men. Four years later, using a new, survey-based methodology, data collected by Professor Elin Bjarnegård from Sweden's Uppsala University in collaboration with IFES suggested a very different situation.

Money and Elections in the Maldives
IFES conducted the first systematic nationwide survey of its kind in the Maldives. The survey was conducted to measure the prevalence of vote buying in the Maldives during the March 2014 parliamentary elections. The final report, Money and Election in Maldives: Perceptions and Reality, will be shared with the Government, the Parliament, the Election Commission, civil society, political parties and others.
