On March 16, 2017, International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES) President & CEO Bill Sweeney presented a copy of the book First Universal Democratic Elections in Independent Georgia to Georgian Ambassador David Bakradze during a reception at the Georgian Embassy in Washington, D.C. welcoming him to his new posting.

The book, a collaboration between Javakhishvili State University, the Central Election Commission and IFES, offers a detailed overview of the first national democratic elections conducted in the Republic of Georgia in 1919. The publication enables readers to get an insight into how Georgia’s newly established government embarked upon building a democratic state, with the goal of ensuring prosperity and equality for its people.

The elections of 1919 offer lessons to the ongoing challenges in present-day Georgia, underscoring the importance of conducting electoral processes professionally, practicing the principles of equality, accessibility and accountability.
